Juneteenth is a federal holiday

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States and is a symbolic date that represents African-American freedom. On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger announced the end of both the Civil War and slavery in Gavleston, Texas. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued 2.5 years prior – which legally freed slaves, many slave owners withheld this information and continued to hold enslaved people after disseminate broadcasting.

Celebrate Juneteenth

Juneteenth celebrations began in 1866 and regularly continued into the early 20th century. Many African-Americans treat this day like the Fourth of July, and the celebrations include similar events such as prayer services, speakers with inspirational messages, reading the Emancipation Proclamation, stories from former slaves, singing the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” food, games, and dances.
