I believe that therapy should act as a catalyst for increased clarity, growth, and self-acceptance, and that through good therapy, clients should be better able to guide themselves through life. I love being that therapist, especially with other members of the LGBTQ+ community, finding it transformative and empowering. It is a privilege to join clients in working through their challenges and a joy to be a part of their story.
As a therapist in sessions, I aim to be warm, empathetic, to take time to build mutual understanding and comfort, and to allow my clients to lead. I often ask open-ended questions, providing reflection on what clients share – exploring what is going on in the moment, potential connections to my client’s history, and eliciting their input. I also tend to highlight my clients’ talents and resources, helping them to see those things alongside potential areas for change. As sessions wrap up, I work to provide containment for whatever may be coming next outside therapy, and plans for what we may cover in next sessions. Throughout, I work to minimize the use of potentially shaming language with my clients, and to take a gentle and trauma-informed approach.
